Eve Johnson reports.

A Connecticut man accused of murdering his estraged wife died on Thursday (January 30).

According to his lawyer, Fotis Dulos had been in critical condition in a Bronx hospital following a suicide attempt earlier in the week.

Local media report Dulos had been due for a bond hearing on Tuesday (January 28).

When he didn't show up, police went to his house and found him unresponsive in a car running in his garage.

Dulos's lawyer, Norm Pattis, lashed out at the public for being "too busy to listen." (SOUNDBITE) (English) NORM PATTIS, DEFENSE ATTORNEY, SAYING: "And we are not bitter and we are not accusing anybody of having driven him to his death, but we wonder why in the court of public opinion the presumption of innocence so quickly satisfied." According to court documents, police searched Dulos's home following the suicide attempt and found a note written by the suspect.

In it, Dulos reportedly declared his innocence and said his lawyers had evidence to prove he had nothing to do with his wife's murder.

Jennifer Dulos disappeared more than seven months ago.

She and her husband were in the midst of divorce proceedings and what media called a "bitter" custody battle over their five kids.

Jennifer's body has never been found.

But Fotis was charged with her murder and kidnapping earlier this month.

His girlfriend was also caught up in the case - charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Police allege the couple went to Hartford to dispose of garbage bags containing items with Jennifer's blood on them.

According to Dulos's lawyer, his family has flown in from Greece to see if his organs can be donated.
